Resources If You Encounter Homeless Individuals in a Mental Health Crisis

Abridge from the Sacramento Bee, “Encounter someone in a mental health crisis? Here are non-police numbers to call in Sacramento” September 14, 2021

SACRAMENTO CITY’S DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY RESPONSE

In the wake of the George Floyd police killing in Minneapolis, the city created the Department of Community Response to respond to certain noncriminal 911 calls, shifting them away from police. The department, which was proposed by Mayor Darrell Steinberg, started responding to the scenes of noncriminal calls involving homeless individuals about 45 days ago, said Bridgette Dean, department director.

The team currently consists of five city employees and about 10 people from nonprofit Hope Cooperative, Dean said. None of them are law enforcement personnel. They work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They respond to calls as quickly as possible, but it’s not always immediate. When the city hires more staff for the department, they will be able to expand the hours and respond more quickly, Dean said.

People can request Department of Community Response service by calling 311 or by visiting the 311 website.

September revision of Overview of Refugee Agencies in Sacramento Document

AACFC member John McCormack compiled a document listing the agencies involved in refugee resettlement and a brief description of them because he could not find one site on the web that listed the work of the 5 Sacramento refugee agencies .

This document is being updated as new information arrives. Please download the latest version (Sept. 2021) using the link below and dispose of previous versions

Due to the rapidly changing refugee situation this document may not be entirely accurate. Contact each agency specifically for information on the number of refugees currently needing support in Sacramento and how to assist them.

Sac City Council Considering Sites for Sheltering Homeless

The Sacramento Bee online has published a list of 47 sites around Sacramento that are being considered for homeless shelters, camps and tiny home sites. According the the story, “The council is expected to vote on the master plan — essentially a map marking properties across the city for potential homeless projects — in July. The Sacramento Bee compiled the sites named in the council presentations to see how the map is shaping up.”

Documentary to Watch

John McCormack, St. Marks, recommends the documentary “United States of Tents“, “which explores the reality of homelessness in the U.S. as of 2018,  using real world visits to homeless camps, tiny homes and other shelter options, in Hawaii, Kansas City, Atlanta, New Jersey and other areas. Sacramento even gets a short video clip.”

It’s available on Amazon—free if you have Prime membership,  or rent it for $2.99.
